Two research organisations have been officially welcomed into their offices on the newly opened 6th floor of the Judge Institute of Management, the University of Cambridge’s business school.

The Institute of Criminology and the Faculty of English have both been given the go-ahead for new buildings on the Sidgwick site. Cambridge City Council’s planning committee have granted outline approval for the two buildings, which are expected to be completed in the summer of 2003.

Plans for a state-of-the-art cancer research centre that will reinforce Cambridge's position as a world leader in cancer research were approved at a meeting of the City Council last week.

The Judge Institute of Management, University of Cambridge has achieved excellent results in the latest MBA rankings issued by the Financial Times today ( 21 January 2001). It came fourth in Europe, 22nd in the world and second overall for all United Kingdom MBA programmes. The Cambridge MBA is the most highly rated one-year MBA programme in the UK.

Today (18 January 2002) the veteran Labour left-winger Tony Benn comes to Cambridge to launch the annual Darwin Lecture series, which this year focuses on the theme of power. In his lecture, entitled Power and Democracy, Benn describes the historic demand for democratic control and the opposition which it has always faced in Britain and world-wide.

The Secretary of State for Health, Alan Milburn yesterday (Wednesday 16 January) announced details of a new Genetics Knowledge Park in Cambridge. The new initiative is part of a national programme to prepare the NHS for the genetics revolution.

Next month the eminent poet Seamus Heaney, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, will give the first of the Clare Hall Tanner Lectures for 2002.

Today (11 January 2001) at 4.30pm a speech by Professor Stephen Hawking will be broadcast live on the BBC website. Professor Hawking will be speaking to an audience of distinguished academics from across the world who have gathered in Cambridge to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Professor Gabriel Horn, Emeritus Professor of Zoology and former Master of Sidney Sussex College, received a Knighthood in the New Year's Honours list for 2002, for services to neurobiology and the advancement of scientific research.
