The current Senior Tutor at Trinity College and Director of the Newton Trust has been appointed to the post of Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education at the University of Cambridge.
Professor John Rallison will assume his new role on October 1, on the retirement of Professor Melveena McKendrick who has held the post since January 2004.
The University has five Pro-Vice-Chancellors who support the Vice-Chancellor in providing institutional and academic leadership to the University, and work in partnership with senior administrators to help drive strategy and policy development.
Professor McKendrick has had a long and distinguished career at Cambridge. She is Professor of Spanish Golden-Age Literature, Culture and Society in the Modern and Medieval Languages Faculty and a Professorial Fellow at Girton College.
She gained her first degree at King's College, London and her PhD and LittD at Cambridge. She served on the University's General Board, was Senior Tutor at Girton College for seven years and is a Fellow of the British Academy.
Professor McKendrick has left a significant legacy in many areas of the University including undergraduate admissions, the development of the tripos, graduate education, pedagogic support and quality assurance.
The Vice-Chancellor Professor Alison Richard said: “I would like to thank Melveena for her outstanding contributions to the University. In John Rallison the University has found a fine successor, and the Pro-Vice-Chancellors and I greatly look forward to working with him.”
Speaking about his appointment, Professor Rallison said: “I am looking forward to taking on the challenging role of Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to build on the considerable achievements of Professor Melveena McKendrick, particularly in the areas of graduate education and undergraduate recruitment.”
Professor Rallison was Director of The Newton Trust for 8 years. The Trust administers the Cambridge bursaries and also makes grants for research purposes within the University.
Under Professor Rallison’s directorship and since September 2006, the value of Cambridge bursaries has increased from £1,000 a year to £3,150 a year, far higher than the minimum £310 a year bursary required by OFFA. The number of students eligible for bursaries has also increased, benefitting up to a third of all students. A new director of the Trust will be appointed shortly.
The new Senior Tutor at Trinity College will be Professor Grae Worster who will take up his post on 1st August.
