Free tours of the University of Cambridge, offered as part of Open Cambridge, are booking up fast. Taking place on Saturday 13 September, Open Cambridge is a new initiative which will give hundreds of people the chance to see some hidden treasures and enjoy both buildings and gardens.

Tours will be led by a wide range of people, who will show visitors their places of work, sharing the history of some outstanding buildings, gardens, libraries and museum collections, and giving a personal insight into the life of the university, past and present.

Still available are places on tours of Wolfson College and garden, led by bursar Christopher Lawrence, a walk round Downing College with domestic bursar Dick Taplin, a chance to sample the history of Cambridge University Press in the historic Pitt Building, and a family-friendly exploration of King’s College Chapel in the company of Dr Rob Wallach, Fellow of King’s.

Not to be missed are tours of some of the University museums, given by members of staff able to offer a unique insight into their collections. Margaret Greeves, Assistant Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, will welcome visitors to the Fitzwilliam. Both a curator, Dr Christopher Chippendale, and a gallery attendant, Peter Rowley, will show groups round the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

Libraries are one of the great cornerstones of Cambridge. Tours are offered of the University Library, an iconic building designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in the 1930s. College libraries are both a treasure trove of literary history and a vital resource for current students. Dr Mark Nicholls, Librarian at St John’s College, will take groups round the college’s old and new libraries.

All Open Cambridge tours not mentioned above are now fully booked.
