Cambridge Maths School: Chance to find out more as applications open for 2023

A Cambridge Maths School Open Event - on Wednesday, 19 October 2022 - will offer school pupils from across the East of England an opportunity to find out more about the new pioneering sixth form, which opens next year.

The free event, at Cambridge University’s Centre for Mathematical Sciences, is aimed at Year 11 students and their parents, but is open to all students who are starting to consider their A-levels options.

Applications for the state-funded sixth form - being developed by the Eastern Learning Alliance, in partnership with the University of Cambridge – opened this week. The Maths School will launch in Mill Road in September 2023, welcoming talented students who will study maths and further maths, and then choose from physics, chemistry, biology or computer science A-Levels.

The October Open Event – which follows the School’s successful Open Events and Eureka outreach enrichment days in the summer - will give prospective students the chance to find out more about the School’s curriculum, and the rich learning experience they can expect. There will be more information about how the School’s specialist teaching will develop students’ academic literacy, and independent learning and study skills.

Founding Headteacher Clare Hargraves, who will present the School’s vision at the event, and answer questions, said: “Mathematics opens up opportunities in academia as well as across a breadth of careers, ranging from metrology to games design, biomedical research to sports statistics. It is a fascinating subject that challenges and rewards those who pursue its study.

“I'm very much looking forward to receiving applications from young people across the region who share our passion for maths and look forward to building an exceptional first cohort together at the Cambridge Maths School.”

Professor Colm-cille Caulfield, Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge (DAMTP), said: “Mathematics in Cambridge is committed to diversifying the subject, and having as wide an impact as possible on pre-University maths education.

“The ‘Eureka Day’ enrichment events held in the summer were hugely enjoyable, and gave us an opportunity to share some of our insights and research with prospective students. Maths is a thrilling and continually evolving subject, and we look forward to encouraging more young people to see the range of opportunities and applications learning maths offers through the Cambridge Maths School partnership.”

Book tickets for the Cambridge Maths School open days, taking place at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Wilberforce Road, Cambridge, at 6pm on Wednesday, 19 October.

If you can’t attend the October date, email hello@cms.tela.org.uk to arrange a meeting with staff at the School.

Working with the University’s Faculty of Mathematics, and drawing on its outreach and widening participation expertise - in particular the success of the Millennium Mathematics Project (MMP) and its NRICH programme - the Cambridge Maths School aims to attract more female students into maths subjects, more minority ethnic students, and more students from socially and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. The School is also working with the Cambridge Mathematics project - a collaboration between Cambridge University Press and Assessment, and the Faculties of Education and Mathematics - to create an innovative mathematics curriculum.
