Homerton College

Homerton College, Cambridge, is inviting talented Year 12 students from Doncaster, Rotherham, Hounslow, Richmond and Kingston to apply for a taste of university life on one of their four 2013 Summer Schools.

35 places are available on each two-day Summer School, hosted by Homerton College and Cambridge University.  Students will stay overnight in Homerton College to experience undergraduate life, and take part in four study sessions led by University academics.

The four Summer Schools are being held between Monday 29th July and Friday 2nd August. Two are for young scientists, including maths, engineering, and computer science, one is for potential students of the arts and humanities, and one for budding social scientists.

Ellen Slack is organising the Summer Schools in her role as Schools Liaison Officer for Homerton College. She knows just how inspiring a Summer School can be: ““In 2008 I came from my state school in Coventry to take part in a Cambridge Summer School. The experience really changed my mind about Cambridge and encouraged me to apply.

“I hope that Homerton College’s Summer Schools will have the same positive effect for students in our link areas of South Yorkshire and the London Boroughs of Hounslow, Richmond and Kingston.”

Steve Watts, Admissions Tutor at Homerton College, which is hosting the Summer Schools, said: “We thought it would be great to give school students a taste of what being at Homerton and Cambridge University was like - while at the same time helping them learn more about their favourite academic subjects.”

Places on the Summer Schools, which are free to attend, are open to Year 12 students at state schools in Doncaster, Rotherham, Hounslow, Richmond and Kingston, which are Homerton College’s link areas under the University of Cambridge’s Area Link Scheme.

Applicants should be nominated by their schools. They should be prepared for thinking and working intensely on questions in their chosen subject areas. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 19th April.
