The Senate House will open its doors to the public for an exclusive performance to celebrate the University’s 800th Anniversary this weekend (4th and 5th December).
One of the most ambitious cultural events seen in Cambridge for many years ‘Light Matter: Celebrating 800 Years of Science Through Art’ is a collaboration of professional artists and emerging student talent that will come together in a show of art, dance, theatre and scientific experimentation.
Themes of time and transition throughout the show will reflect the depth of Cambridge tradition whilst celebrating the anniversary year.
Sir Isaac Newton will also feature in the show, with use of stunning visual effects relaying his epoch-making quest to understand the nature of light.
Cambridge Contemporary Dance have worked in conjunction with the University to produce this unique celebration
The performances will also feature world premieres of work by Issam Kourbaj Christ’s College artist in residence, Vanessa Fenton of the Royal Ballet, and composer David Earl.
Set and lighting designers will take Senate House as their canvas, creating site-specific artwork of scope and daring.
Issam Kourbaj said: ‘Visually and choreographically, how you could use the space becomes part of the performance. The great thing about this project is that there is no script, it’s a blank canvas, so the starting point is visual, and everybody having a reaction to the visual.’
There will be two performances, the first, on Friday 4th December will start at 7:30pm and the second, on Saturday 5th December will start at 6:00pm and is a black tie gala.
Tickets are priced at £16 (£14 concessions) and are available online at: www.adcticketing.com or by telephone: 01223 300085
An interval wine reception is included in the ticket price.
