A Grant Scheme is to be launched by the Amateur Entomologists’ Society (AES) in memory of the late Professor Mike Majerus, Professor of Evolution at the Department of Genetics, and AES President 2005-2009.

The Scheme is in recognition of Mike’s effort and vitality in promoting the AES and encouraging young entomologists.

Christina Poole Majerus said: “This is a great honour and will ensure his deeply held convictions regarding the need for enthusiastic teaching and to engage young naturalists and entomologists in the study and appreciation of the environment, will be promoted.”

Mike’s research at the Majerus lab focused on ladybirds and in particular the arrival of the invasive harlequin ladybird, Harmonia axyridis, in the UK. This subject proved popular with the British public, and thanks to numerous media appearances by Mike, thousands of records of the distribution of harlequin ladybirds (and native British ladybirds) were sent in from around the country, resulting in a dataset of unprecedented quality for the early establishment of an invasive (non-native) species.

The official launch of the Grant Scheme will be at the AES Members’ Day on April 24 2010. Marking the 75th anniversary of the AES the Grant sets out to encourage active involvement in entomology study, research or education and to engage a new generation of entomologists.

The Grant Scheme will initially be funded by donations received by the Society in memory of Mike and funds donated from the Pilkington Teaching Prize which he was awarded earlier this year.

For further information, or to make a donation to the Fund please contact the secretary of the Society at secretary@amentsoc.org.
