Staff and students at the University of Cambridge have been invited to a special performance by Britten Sinfonia and lecture by renowned linguist David Crystal on the theme of ‘Anniversaries’.

The event comes as part of a series of celebrations to mark the 425th anniversary of Cambridge University Press, as it was in 1584 that the first book was printed in Cambridge by a practising University Printer.

Stephen Bourne, Chief Executive of Cambridge University Press, said “I am delighted that we are supporting such a special performance by Britten Sinfonia and a lecture by the world-renowned linguist and author David Crystal.”

“Also in 2009 the University marks its 800th anniversary, so it is a good opportunity for us to join in celebrating the books, people, ideas and achievements that have emerged from this shared history which continues to inspire and transform the world.”

Other events taking place to commemorate the Press’s anniversary include a lecture by William Hague and a unique outdoor production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the grounds of Cambridge University Press, with all proceeds going to charity.
