One of the UK’s most innovative string ensembles will perform the world premiere of a new string quartet written for them by Keith Tippett at Kettle’s Yard on Sunday, March 1 at 12.00.
The new piece by Tippett, String Quartet No.1, includes an improvisatory section, and a new quartet by the composer and sound designer Matthew Rogers.
The Elysian Quartet are the only British string quartet of its generation focused exclusively on 20th Century, contemporary and experimental music. Formed in 1999 by prize-winning students at Trinity College of Music, they have performed all over the world to great acclaim.
Notable for the breadth of their musical interests, the Elysian Quartet have worked with artists as diverse as virtuoso beat-boxer Killa Kela, jazz pianist Keith Tippett, and experimental electronic composer Simon Fisher-Turner. They have also worked with bands such as Hot Chip and Polar Bear, performed in Ronnie Scott’s jazz club and created a contemporary classical club night in Shoreditch.
They have recently released an EP of their own music on MySpace. Recent commissions include a major new work, Inside, by Graham Fitkin and a series of pieces by Max De Wardener which will comprise part of a limited edition music/artwork product being released in collaboration with famed Radiohead visual artist Stanley Donwood.
Tickets for the concert cost £6 (£4 concessions) and are available online at https://www.adcticketing.com/ or by phone on 01223 300085. Coffee is served in the gallery from 11.30am where the exhibition ‘Roundhouse of international spirits’ is on display.
