The Varsity Football Match returns to the banks of the River Thames on 2 April after a five year absence.

Throughout the 1990s the annual match between Oxford and Cambridge was played at the home of Fulham FC, Craven Cottage, on the same day as the Boat Race. The stadium lies on the Middlesex bank of the Thames, a mile up from the traditional start of the Boat Race at Putney.

Redevelopment of the Fulham stadium to meet the demands of Premiership football meant alternative venues had to be found, which included the homes of Oxford United, Cambridge United and Queens Park Rangers.

For 2006 the match returns to this prime location and tickets are now on sale.

With Cambridge University Association Football Club celebrating its 150th anniversary this year the occasion is particularly momentous.

Club President John Little, who played in five Varsity matches in the 1970s when they were staged at Wembley Stadium, explained the further significance: “For many years we were the overall leaders in terms of games won, but after a poor recent run the scores are level at 46 games won each. We are confident that we can prevent Oxford going into the lead for the first time in the history of the match but need plenty of support.”

Tickets for the match which kicks off at 1pm on 2 April are £10 for adults and £5 for children. The tickets include a match programme, Riverside Stand seating for the match and prime viewing space on the Riverside Terrace for the Goldie and Isis Race which is due to start at 4pm, and the 152nd University Boat Race, due to start at 4.35pm.
