Cambridge golfers tee off for charity

Golfing enthusiasts across Cambridge are gearing up to lend their expertise to raise money for a University charity.

On 13 June, around 20 teams from different University departments, and associated organisations, will be competing in Campod's first Annual Golfing Challenge, at Bourn Golf Course.

As well as competing in the 18-hole competition, golfers will also be awarded prizes for the longest drive, the nearest pin and the best putter. Entrants will be invited to a buffet dinner and award ceremony in the evening.

Alexandra Jarvis, Campod Co-ordinator, said:

"The Department of Pathology carries out vital research that is both ground-breaking and life-saving, but also costs money. Although the Department receives substantial funding from Research Councils, the European Union and major charities, support for specific new initiatives is always needed.

"We are already delighted with the number of people supporting the Golfing Challenge and the generosity of everyone who has donated prizes. Hopefully this will become a key event in Campod's fund-raising calendar."

Campod (Cambridge Fund for the Prevention of Disease) was set up to raise funds to support the leading-edge research work of the Department of Pathology.

Since 1999, funds raised by the charity have purchased equipment for research costing more than £200,000. Money raised by Campod has permitted the start of new research, and the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment.

Research activities in the Department include work on cancer, the immune response, atherosclerosis, infections by viruses, bacteria and parasites, and brain diseases such as BSE and Alzheimer's Disease.
