The University has played a major part in making the arrival of the new Millennium in Cambridge a night to remember.

The celebrations on Parker's Piece will include a fun fair and a spectacular fireworks display.

The University and the City Council have been working together on the celebrations, under the banner "Town and Gown - United in Celebration". The University has made a major donation of £10,000 towards the cost of the night's events. Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Chair of the University Millennium Committee, Anne Lonsdale, commented, "The University is always keen to support the local community and is especially excited to be involved in the city's Millennium celebrations."

Attractions on Parker's Piece include a fun fair, live music, a giant bar, screens conveying messages from around the world, lighted beacons and stalls selling every kind of food. As many local pubs and restaurants are expected to close, the event is likely to attract people from all around the region.

The University also has its own programme of public events underway to celebrate the Millennium, ranging from concerts to tree plantings. In addition, the participation of almost one third of University staff in the M&S and New Millenium Experience Company's Children's Promise campaign has raised over £25,000 for children's charities.
