Quentin Skinner, the Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge, will be giving the inaugural Dr Lee Seng Tee Distinguished Lecture this Wednesday 24 October at Wolfson College.

In debating the nature of the state he will ask whether it is like a fictional person who has powers separate from both the rulers and the ruled. Is it merely the power of the government? Or should we take the modern sceptical view and admit that there is no specific person or body of persons who can any longer be said to exercise untrammelled sovereignty?

Does this mean, therefore, that we have reached the end of the road for the theory of the state?

The lecture will begin at 5.30pm in the Lee Hall at Wolfson College.

The lecture is open to all and will be followed by a drinks reception.
