The annual reception for scholars of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and Cambridge Overseas Trust took place last Monday at the Fitzwilliam Museum. The event was attended by the Trusts’ Patron, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.
His Royal Highness was welcomed at the Museum by the Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Hugh Duberly, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Dr Timothy Potts, and three representatives of the Trusts – Sir Martin Harris, Chair of the Trustees, Michael O’Sullivan, Director, and Sue Osterfield, Deputy Director.
HRH then met and talked with students of many nationalities who are supported during their studies at Cambridge by scholarships awarded by the Trusts and their funding partners.
Himself an alumnus of Trinity College, The Prince of Wales was Chairman of the Trustees of both Trusts until last September, and they are delighted that he agreed to continue his support as their Patron.
The Trusts assist international students on degree courses at the University of Cambridge.
Since their foundation in the 1980s, they have helped more than 15,000 students to benefit from study in Cambridge.
They work with funding partners both within Cambridge and further afield to offer full and part-cost scholarships to outstanding students from outside the EU, many of whom would not be able to take up the offer of a place at the University without financial assistance.
During the current academic year, the Trusts are supporting a total of 1265 students from 83 countries, at all levels of study – undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral level.
Over 600 students from 69 countries attended the occasion, and had the opportunity to view the galleries of the Museum, as well as meeting Trustees and staff of the Trusts, funding partners, and senior representatives of the University.
