Plant Heritage Day has been organised by the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire country groups of the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens.
And visitors to the Botanic Garden on June 8 will be able to discover how the nation’s gardeners have been conserving plant species and cultivars – as well as getting sound advice from BBC presenter and Gardeners’ Question Time panellist Roy Lancaster.
Lancaster, a graduate of the Botanic Garden’s horticultural training scheme, and Vice-President of the NCCPG, is guest of honour on the day.
Plant Heritage Day offers visitors an unrivalled chance to tap into the expert gardening knowledge of more than 25 National Collection Holders, whose collecting interests encompass trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants and bulbs and include Campanula, Dianthus, Lathyrus and more.
The Botanic Garden itself is the second largest National Collection Holder in the UK and its collections of species Geranium and shrubby Honeysuckles (Lonicera) should be looking spectacular on June 8.
A dedicated marquee on the Garden’s main lawn will be crammed with plant and poster displays and visitors will be able to buy a selection of plants from some of the National Collections.
Throughout the day, professional horticultural staff from the Garden and elsewhere will be giving talks and tours to provide a fascinating insight into the challenges and rewards of conservation through cultivation.
Normal Botanic Garden entry fees apply, with no extra charge for Plant Heritage Day. Friends of the Botanic Garden are admitted free of charge, as are children under 16 accompanied by an adult.
