Music lovers are invited to a free public performance of classical music composed by former Director of Music at King’s College, Sir Philip Ledger at Christ’s College on Wednesday, 17 February.

Sir Philip will be welcomed back to Cambridge to attend the event, which will be performed by Christ’s College Choir. His most substantial work to date, ‘Requiem: A Thanksgiving for Life’ will be performed with other pieces. The Requiem is fast becoming popular with choirs throughout the world and has previously been broadcast by the BBC.

This will follow a series of collaborations between Christ's College Choir and Sir Philip, who previously conducted a liturgical performance of his Requiem, on Remembrance Sunday 2008 in the College Chapel.

Chaplain of Christ's, The Revd Christopher Woods, said, ‘We are very much looking forward to welcoming back Sir Philip to Christ's to cement what is already a very convivial and fruitful relationship. The release of the most recent CD under the Regent Records label adds yet another top quality recording to the discography of the College Choir. We are very fortunate to have the support and encouragement of Sir Philip, whose compositions suit the context of the devotional and reflective spirituality of the College Chapel.’

In December 2008, Sir Philip joined forces with the choir to direct some of the recording of a CD featuring a large selection of his compositions. The CD was released in December 2009 and will be on sale in the ante-chapel after the performance on 17th February.

Sir Philip was Director of Music at King’s College Cambridge from 1974 until 1982 and Conductor of the Cambridge University Musical Society from 1973 until 1982. He also directed the Choir of King’s College in the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, and made an extensive range of recordings, even taking the choir to the USA, Australia, and Japan for the first time in its history.

He has conducted many leading orchestras and is widely respected as a pianist, harpsichordist and organist. He has made numerous recordings with artists such as Benjamin Britten, Dame Janet Baker, Paul Tortelier, Pinchas Zukerman and Robert Tear.

The performance will begin at 6:30pm at Christ’s College Chapel, and is open to all, including alumni and members of the public.

Admission is free, but there will be a retiring collection, for more information please use the link top right of the page.
