The special, transformative qualities of gardens are brought into focus with an interdisciplinary conference at the University of Cambridge Botanic Garden next month.

The one-day event on Friday, 8 July, entitled ‘Moving Gardens’, is a collaboration between the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH) and the Botanic Garden, and is the third in a series which has included conferences in California and Sydney.

The conference, which is intended for both scholars and gardeners, includes tours of both the Botanic Garden and the Clare College Gardens. There will also be special talks and a witness seminar led by Prof John Parker (Director, University of Cambridge Botanic Garden), Prof David Ingram (Regius Keeper, Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh 1990-1998 and Master of St Catharine's College, Cambridge) and Dr Andrew Sclater (Co-founder, National Botanic Garden of Wales).

The event, which begins at the Botanic Garden, will include a special selection of poetry readings by Prof Gillian Beer.

"This event will be a unique opportunity to hear from people who work in, run, think about and respond to gardens," said Ludmilla Jordanova, Director of CRASSH.

The conference starts at 10am on Friday, 8 July, and further information, including booking details, can be found at www.crassh.cam.ac.uk.
