An exhibition of paintings inspired by some of the most iconic figures of the Romantic Period goes on display at Clare Hall this week.
Michael Wilson's ‘Lyric Paintings after Schubert, Keats and Strauss' opens this Friday and goes on public display from 10 November to 18 December.
The collection of artwork is referred to as ‘lyric paintings' partly because of the use of song lyrics for inspiration but also due to a link with lyric poetry which is normally set to music and focuses on the expression of feeling and emotions. Imagination and emotion were the key inspirations for the artists and composers during the Romantic Period of the 19th century and have heavily influenced Wilson's work.
Born in 1951 Wilson studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London University. He joined the National Gallery in 1975 where he worked as Curator of French Paintings and as Head of Exhibitions before leaving in 2003 to concentrate on his own art.
The work of Wilson's primary inspiration, Franz Schubert, can be heard during the course of the exhibition. ‘Die Winterreise' (The Winter Trip) written for tenor and piano will be performed at Clare Hall 24 November.
The free exhibition is at Clare Hall Gallery, Herschel Road, open from 9 am – 5 pm.
