The University of Cambridge’s West Cambridge site is well known for its high-tech departments and the buildings that house them. March saw the start of the first buildings that will turn this science and technology development into a living community.
A range of residential buildings that will house University staff and postgraduate students, and a nursery for over 80 children are expected to be completed in the Spring of next year. They will create 205 apartments for staff and students to live in for up to two years at a time.
The West Cambridge development is part of the University’s overall strategy for providing modern research and teaching facilities for departments who need to move out of city centre buildings; either because they are unsuitable for the changing teaching methods or are physically unsuitable for expansion.
As well as creating opportunities for scientific advancement, essential for the University to maintain its position as one of the world’s top academic institutions, the development also stimulates commercial research opportunities and enhances Cambridge as a major centre for technological research and development.
Planning permission was granted by Cambridge City Council in July 2002 for this landmark social development at West Cambridge.
The University’s already has one staff nursery, providing for 50 children at a time and is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month. The new nursery at West Cambridge will provide day care facilities for staff and students, with places for 88 children. The University also offers bursaries to help towards nursery places and childcare costs for students.
