Some of the region’s most talented artists, as well as its up-and-coming stars, feature in a major biennial exhibition at Kettle’s Yard.
Kettle’s Yard Open 2008 combines paintings, photographs, sculptures and animation to showcase 20 of the Eastern region’s brightest talents.
Chosen from more than 300 submissions, a hugely-varied collection of work takes in derelict urban spaces in Andrew Vass’ abstract paintings, as well as sculptures made from scrapyard machinery parts in Telfer Stokes’ work.
Gideon Pain’s drawings examine his daily commute to London – and the passengers who share it - while Nicola Naismith peeks into factories before making thought-provoking works with sewing needles.
As well as more traditional works, Open 2008 also features animation being used in a variety of ways including Neil Henderson’s film made in collaboration with musician Evan Parker and visual artist Polly Read.
Andrew Vass will appear at Kettle’s Yard on December 11 to talk about his work.
Open 2008 runs until January 11 with most works in the exhibition up for sale. This year’s artists have been selected by Gill Hedley, former Director of the Contemporary Arts Society, and Simon Wallis, once Exhibitions Organiser at Kettle’s Yard, now Director of the Hepworth in Wakefield.
