Grammy award winning violinist Pinchas Zukerman will perform in Cambridge in a special concert on Monday 1 March, as part of the Camerata Musica: International Artists Series, thanks to an anonymous benefactor.

Zukerman will appear alongside his Chamber Players in the final concert of the series held at Peterhouse.

Born in Israel, Zukerman moved to the United States to study at the Juilliard School, making his debut in New York in 1963. He went on to win the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1966 and later became Director of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

He has recorded over 100 works and has been nominated for 21 Grammy Awards, winning two, the first for Best Chamber Music Performance in 1980 alongside Itzhak Perlman, and Best Classical Performance by an Instrumental Soloist without Orchestra in 1981.

He has collaborated with some of the world’s finest orchestras and musicians, touring extensively throughout the United States.

Zukerman is particularly interested in inspiring young musicians, and is currently a faculty member at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music where he is head of the Zukerman Performance Program.

The Zukerman Chamber Players, formed in 2003, have performed over 40 concerts around the world and recorded four CDs, the latest release in May 2008.

The ensemble is made up of some of the world’s most distinguished soloists: Sadao Harada, founding member of the Tokyo String Quartet, Jessica Linnebach, first violinist in the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Jethro Marks, founding violist in the Chamber Players. Ashan Pillai, Principal viola in the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and Amanda Forsyth, Principal cello of the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Zukerman’s wife.

Music performed on the night will range from Mozart to Brahms and Boccherini.

Camerata Musica was founded in 2005 and aims to bring international musicians of distinction to Cambridge, and to make high standards of classical music available to all. This year, the series has been supported by The Kohn Foundation.

Previous musicians that have appeared include Kurt Masur and members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Garlikitsky Trio, Sir Thomas Allen, Natalie Clein, The Tallis Scholars and Melchior Ensemble.

Full price tickets for the event are £30, concessions (OAP’s and university members) £15 and students £5. Due to high demand for student tickets, those interested should please email admin@cameratamusica.org.uk to be entered into a ballot. The concert will begin at 8:30pm
