Works inspired by 17th century poet John Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’ are to be unveiled at an open evening at Michaelhouse Chancel, Cambridge on 23rd January.

The works are part of a two-year project by the contemporary painter Tom de Freston, in partnership with Christ’s College Chapel.

‘Paradise Lost’, first published in 1667, concerns the Christian story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

Tom de Freston holds the Leverhulme Artist in residence position at the University, a position previously held by Ruth Padel, the prize-winning British poet and author. De Freston is also the current Artist in residence at the Leys School, Cambridge.

In the past year, two other significant monographs have been released on his work, ‘Reflection’ and ‘Ekphrasis’. The former saw five leading academics critique his paintings and the latter saw 15 poets respond to his work and. His work belongs to various important public collections, including the epic sized commission ‘History Painting’ in Christ’s College.

In February, the paintings will be moved to the University Library to form part of a larger de Freston solo show. On Easter Sunday 2011 de Freston's paintings for Christ’s College Chapel will be unveiled, marked by a special service and a new monograph on his work.
