This year’s Festival will look at some of the biggest challenges facing mankind; issues that could lead us to a better world - or a nightmare world if answers can’t be found.

The University’s arts, humanities and social sciences festival, the Festival of Ideas is on the lookout for artists who can bring to life this year’s theme of ‘Dreams and Nightmares’.
Festival Organiser Sophie Smith is to launch a competition that will see the winner’s art adorn more than 25,000 Festival programmes and other publicity materials. The winner will also receive £200 prize money.
She said: “This year’s Festival will look at some of the biggest challenges facing mankind; issues that could lead us to a better world - or a nightmare world if answers can’t be found.
“We need someone who can bring this to life visually, someone who can sum up the duality of this year’s Festival theme in powerful, inventive imagery.”
Entries to the competition will also feature as part of a digital exhibition on the Festival’s website.
Added Smith: “The response to last year’s Face of the Festival competition was fantastic. The Festival is an amazing platform for showcasing creative work and I’m really looking forward to seeing the variety of interpretations of this year’s theme.”
The concept of ‘Dreams and Nightmares’ will inspire hundreds of events when the Festival returns for its fifth year from 24 October – 4 November, 2012. More than 12,000 people attended last year and this year will offer even more diversity than ever with inspiring, thought-provoking debates and hands on family fun.
The competition opens on Monday, April 23, and more details on how to enter can be found at: /festivalofideas/getinvolved/competitions/
The closing date for entries is Friday, July 6.
