The Department of Chemical Engineering is holding a two-day Symposium on September 30 and October 1 to mark the retirement of the current Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering, John Bridgwater.
Academics from around the globe will speak on Professor Bridgwater’s research interests and many considered the future of chemical engineering. Speakers will include including Dr Ramesh Mashelkar Head of CSIR, India, Professor Alexis Bell (Berkeley) and Professor Ko Hagishatani from Japan. The range of topics span Professor Bridgwater’s research interests and many will consider the future direction of chemical engineering. One session will feature presentations from Dr Robin Batterham (Australia) and Prof Roland Clift (Surrey) on implementing sustainability, which IChemE endorsed in the 1997 London Communiqué during John's term as IChemE President.
Professor Bridgwater has been the Shell Professor since 1993, served as Head of Department until 1998 and was President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers for 1997-98. He has been a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering since 1987.
Professor Bridgwater has worked on Particle Technology throughout his career and has done much to initiate new lines of work to open up the discipline. His other main current research interest lies in paste mechanics, some of the earlier work being summarised in a book with John Benbow
