Michelle left school at 15 without any qualifications, became a single parent at 16 and returned to education via an Access course at the age of 35.  She achieved a place at Lucy Cavendish College to study Politics, Psychology and Sociology, graduating in 2011.

Michelle is now working as an Outreach Ambassador for the four Cambridge Colleges which are exclusively for mature students, in order to encourage and inspire others.

“I had a rewarding career in the public sector, but when I reached my 30s I felt that with my son grown up it was my turn to fulfil my long-held ambition to return to education and fulfil my academic potential. Michelle said.

“My access course was an excellent entry point in returning to education, it gave me the skills to progress into Higher education.  Once I was made aware of the mature colleges at Cambridge and realised that people from my sort of background would be welcome then it gave me the impetus to work hard, aim high and apply.”

“I am passionate about widening participation in the field of education. I was the first person in my family to graduate and I am sure I won’t be the last!  I really enjoyed taking part in Waltham Forest College’s Progression Month sharing my own story and answering questions about studying at Cambridge as a mature student.”

Robin Jones, Principal at Waltham Forest College, said: “This year’s progression activities have been exceptionally successful. Students gained some insights into the range of career opportunities are available to them once they complete their studies here. Michelle is a great exemplar of how someone’s life can be transformed through education”
