Cambridge University did the double over Oxford in the Lord’s Varsity matches this week as both the men’s and women’s cricket teams recorded victories.
An opening stand of 138 between Akbar Ansari and Richard Timms laid the foundations of a one-day win for the men as they made 286-8 batting first at the home of cricket.
Timms and Ansari both reached their half-centuries; Timms falling on 55 and Ansari on 73 as they made the most of some wayward bowling from Oxford.
It was a day to forget in the field for Oxford as they served up a mammoth 42 wides in amongst some lacklustre fielding.
Scott MacLennan (27) and captain Fred Owen (33) were also in the runs as Oxford were set 287 for the win.
They were quickly put out of the game though as Ben Jacklin, Hemingway and MacLennan kept things tight with the ball.
Despite a game 81 from Oxford’s Neil Kruger, Cambridge spinners Baker (4-66) and Hemingway (2-59) helped wrap things up as Oxford slumped to 239.
Meanwhile, Charlotte Hornsby led the women’s team to victory at Lord’s Nursery Ground with a magnificent 119 not out in a score of 281-3. In reply, Oxford could only muster 127 as Cambridge recorded a 154-run win.
The men’s Varsity win followed hot on the heels of their success against a host of world-famous Test cricketers in last week’s Lashings World XI match.
A side containing the likes of Pakistan’s Rashid Latif, New Zealand’s Chris Harris and former England Test players Ed Giddins and Alan Mullally were put to the sword by Cambridge as they held out for a one-wicket win.
Lashings made 187-8 from their 35 overs as Zimbabwean hot-shot Brendan Taylor plundered 62 opening with India's Dinesh Mongia (38).
Hemingway and Timms were the pick of Cambridge’s attack with 3-19 and 2-4 respectively.
Replying, Timms also made 50 before falling to Harris as Cambridge reached a winning 191-9 with just two balls to spare. Hemingway also made his presence felt with the bat as he scored a quick-fire 45 from 20 balls down the order.
Elsewhere, St Catharine's College face MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) this Sunday at South Green Road sports ground, 11.30am start. The match is being staged to promote cricketing ties between MCC and the Colleges. All spectators are welcome.
