The University Careers Service hosted their sixth annual Cam Connect careers event for local employers at the Judge Business School last week.
Cam Connect remains popular amongst local employers and Cambridge students deciding to stay and work in the Cambridge sub-region, which is a healthy indicator of the vibrant economy in and around the city.
20 organisations, seven of them first time attendees, came to discuss their vacation and permanent opportunities with over 200 Cambridge University first degree, postgraduate and MBA students who visited over the three hours. They included Cambridge Silicon Radio, ARM, Autonomy Systems Ltd, Library House, Cambridge Consultants and TTP Group plc.
Small and medium-sized enterprises, which make up the majority of Cam Connect participants, sometimes struggle to raise their profile among Cambridge students, unable to predict their recruitment needs sufficiently far ahead to join the traditional graduate ‘milk round’ in the Autumn.
The event helps raise their profile and allows them to recruit on an equal footing with the country's largest recruiters.
One recruiter commented: “Students had done research and were well informed,” while another said: “We feel very positive about taking discussions further to recruit intern and permanent positions.”
Cam Connect is one of a dozen careers events hosted by the Careers Service in Cambridge throughout the year. Over 450 organisations have attended these events covering all sectors from law and banking to the media and for-more-than-profit sectors.
“Despite the internet, employers and students still attach great importance to meeting each other face-to-face at these careers events, to discuss what each has to offer and begin to identify if they could have a long and beneficial future together,” says Gordon Chesterman, Director of the University Careers Service.
