Seven British Blues helped Team GB top the Olympic medal table at the Beijing Games and record the country’s best results in the sport since 1908.

The British rowers topped the table with six medals – two Gold, two Silver and two Bronze – three ahead of nearest rivals Australia.

The coxless four that took Britain’s third successive Gold in the event on Saturday after a late surge past the Australian boat included bowman Tom James, the former Cambridge oarsman (2003, 2005, 2006 & 2007) and last year’s CUBC President, as well as Steve Williams, the sole survivor of the crew that won Gold four years ago. This crew only raced together for the first time at the start of the Olympic regatta.

The British crew that took silver in the Men’s Eight included Cambridge Blues Josh West (1998, 1999, 2000 & 2001) and Tom Stallard (1999, 2000, 2001 & 2002), Oxford’s Colin Smith (2004 & 2006) and was steered by Dark Blue cox Acer Nethercott (2003, 2004 & 2005). They were beaten by an impressive Canadian boat that featured another Oxford Blue, Jake Wetzel(2006).

Colin Smith is now scheduled to return to Oxford to study for a Masters degree and take up his role as the new President of Oxford University Boat Club.

The 2009 Boat Race, sponsored by Xchanging - the fast-growing
