The President of the Asian Development Bank, Haruhiko Kuroda, is to address the impact of Chinese and Indian economic growth at a public lecture hosted by Clare College.

The talk, which will be the second Clare Distinguished Lecture in Economics and Public Policy, will take place on February 1st and is entitled “The Development of China and India – Prospects And Problems”.

Among those expected to attend are the Chief Representative for Europe of the People’s Bank of China and the Finance Minister at the Japanese Embassy.

As President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Mr Kuroda is head of an organisation dedicated to improving the welfare of people in Asia and the Pacific, in particular the 1.9 billion who live on less than $2 a day. The ADB’s stated mission is to help the developing member countries, reduce poverty and improve the quality of life of their citizens.

Mr Kuroda was first elected its President in November 2004 and unanimously re-elected last year. Before joining he was Special Advisor to the Cabinet of Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and a Professor at the Graduate School of Economics at Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo.

His major achievements in a distinguished financial career spanning nearly four decades include helping to design and implement the $30 billion Miyazawa Initiative – Japan’s response to Asian economies hit by the 1997-8 financial crisis. He also led the establishment of the Chiang Mai Initiative, a network of currency swap agreements designed to avert a repeat. He has also written several books on monetary policy, exchange rate, international finance policy co-ordination, international taxation and international negotiations.

The lecture will be the second in a series of Clare Distinguished Lectures in Economics and Public Policy aimed at encouraging the interface between business and academia. The series is funded by The Smithers & Co. Charity, founded by Andrew Smithers, an alumnus of Clare College who graduated in economics in 1959.

The lecture will take place in the Lady Mitchell Hall, Sidgwick Avenue, on 1 February 2007 at 5 p.m. Dr Andrea Boltho (Fellow and Tutor in Economics, Magdalen College, Oxford) will act as discussant. All are welcome and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
