The first Sunday Coffee Concert, on 31 January, will be performed by Kazakh violinist Aisha Orazbayeva. Her dynamic playing will bring to life a varied programme for solo violin and electronics. The programme includes ‘Charged’ by Anna Meredith of the Camberwell Composers’ Collective, who recently worked with Goldie on a commission for the 2009 BBC Proms.
On Sunday 14 February Dutch composer Michel van der Aa, will be featured in a portrait concert. His chamber music pieces and a new commission for instruments and electronics will be performed by Jane Mitchell, flute, Alex Wood, violin, Oliver Coates, cello and Huw Watkins, piano.
This is ahead of the first production in the UK of van der Aa’s opera Afterlife at the Barbican in May.
Concerts later in the series feature virtuoso percussionist Joby Burgess performing with the Southbank Gamelan Players; hip harpsichordist Jane Chapman with an electroacoustic programme and the Chroma ensemble.
The Sunday Coffee Concerts all begin at 12 noon, with coffee served in the exhibition gallery from 11.30am where audiences have the chance to see the latest exhibition. The concerts last about an hour. Tickets are £6 (£4 concessions) and are available from Kettle’s Yard on 01223 748100 or online at www.kettlesyard.co.uk/newmusic. Some tickets will also be available on the door.
Alongside the Sunday Coffee Concerts are a series of free New Music Mornings performed by regional new music groups. Also from 19-21 February Modern Times: Connecting Composers: a weekend of concerts, talk and film will take place. This weekend was developed to complement our current exhibition Modern Times: responding to chaos and explores the new music Summer school held at Darmstadt, Germany.
